The Merry-Go-Round

Set in South Carolina "The Merry-Go-Round" tells the story of an itinerant, white carousel barker who tries to seduce a black girl, Meta. Meta's boyfriend, Jesse Weeks, beats up the barker who waits his opportunity and goes to Weeks' cabin and shoots him. Weeks is crippled by the bullet. The barker is helped to escape by "white gentlemen" but his carousel is burned to the ground. The barker moves on to a more successful life while Weeks spends his days making baskets and fish traps and Meta and her mother take in laundry.
